Gerard Baker is US Editor and an Assistant Editor of The Times.

     He writes weekly columns on US and international politics and on business and economics as well as frequent commentaries on other aspects of US and global current events. 

     A native of the UK, Baker has lived in Washington for ten years.  

Before joining The Times he worked for the Financial Times, as Tokyo correspondent from 1994 to 1996, then as Washington Bureau Chief and finally as Chief US Commentator and Associate Editor.  From 1988 to 1994 he worked for BBC News, as a producer and reporter.  Before that he worked as an analyst in the City of London, including a stint at the Bank of England.

     Baker also writes widely for other journals in the US and Europe He is a contributing editor to the Weekly Standard, the influential US political magazine. He has also written for journals such as Foreign Policy and The National Interest, as well as for the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times and he has appeared frequently on TV and radio around the world. 

     Born in London in 1962, he was educated at Oxford University and lives in Washington with his wife and five daughters.
